Disability Engagement Group

The Department of Human Services (DHS) has appointed 12 people with strong knowledge and understanding of disability as founding members of the Disability Engagement Group (DEG).

DEG members will serve an initial term of 1 to 2 years, meeting quarterly to provide advice to government on future directions of the State Disability Inclusion Plan, Inclusive SA and the trends in the disability sector and emerging issues.

Inclusive SA is the state government’s commitment to the South Australian community and provides a framework for government agencies and local councils to improve access and inclusion for people living with disability.

The DEG members develop advice to support access and inclusion for people living with disability across government and in the community. Their valued contributions are informed through a mix of skills, experience and a broad range of human diversity:

• lived experience of disability
• experience of being a carer, parent or a family member of a person with disability
• have an interest in disability policy matters and current trends.

The new DEG will also aim to support members develop advisory and leadership skills.

We can’t create a more inclusive state without hearing directly from people with disability and those who support them. We are pleased to introduce our DEG members, who met for the first time on 4 March 2022. The panel provides a voice for a broad range of diverse peoples including:

• people of a variety of ages and genders
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
• those from diverse cultural backgrounds
• those living in different South Australian geographical locations (metropolitan and regional)
• those with diverse experiences of disability.

The Disability Engagement Group operates alongside the government's 12-member Disability Advisory Council.
