South Australian Autism Inclusion Charter

The South Australian Government committed to the development and implementation of South Australia’s first Autism Inclusion Charter (the Charter).

In consultation with Autistic and autism communities, the Charter has been developed to enhance activities guided by the SA Autism Strategy 2024-2029 and maximise opportunities for innovation and progress for the benefit of all South Australians.

The South Australian Autism Inclusion Charter was officially launched on 2 April 2024 on the World Autism Day.

The Department of Human Services, a signatory to the Autism Inclusion Charter, has committed to ensuring our workplace is inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for Autistic people.

Discussion Paper: starting the conversation

In 2022 the South Australian Government committed to co-design what it would be the first State Autism Strategy of its kind.

On 25 November 2022, the South Australia’s First Autism Strategy Discussion Paper 2023 was launched to facilitate a consultation process for Autistic people, families and caregivers, public sector, non-government organisations and local councils to have their say on the matter.

Public consultation

From November 2022 to February 2023, the Department of Human Services led one of the largest public consultations ever held in the state on disability-related matters.

The consultation sought feedback from the Autistic and autism communities, and other interested parties, through a combination of written submissions, an online survey, public forums and targeted focus groups.

Over 1,200 submissions were received throughout this period and informed the Consultation Report , which was released on 4 July 2023.

Drafting the Strategy

Incorporating Feedback

Following an extensive consultation process, the Department of Human Services initiated the drafting of the Strategy. This draft was heavily influenced by the valuable feedback collected, which helped shape the Strategy's direction and key priorities.

Advisory Committees

The development of the Strategy was significantly supported by the State Autism Strategy Advisory Committee. This 13-member group, comprised of Autistic individuals and/or parents and carers of Autistic individuals, played a crucial role. Their lived experiences and expertise provided essential insights that guided the 7 Strategy’s Focus Areas.

In addition to the Advisory Committee, the South Australian Disability Reform Interdepartmental Committee (SADRIC) was also engaged. This cross-department network offered support, guidance, and advice related to their respective agency portfolios, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to the Strategy.

Draft Strategy

After incorporating the diverse inputs and expertise from these committees, the draft Strategy was finalized. It was subsequently published for further consultation, inviting public feedback from 4 March 2024 to 29 March 2024. This step aims to ensure the Strategy is well-rounded, inclusive, and reflective of the community's needs and perspectives.

SA Autism Strategy 2024–2029

Throughout the second consultation process, additional feedback was welcomed to refine the Strategy, ensuring it accurately addressed the barriers, goals, and aspirations identified by the Autistic and autism communities.

Overall, the Strategy has garnered nearly 1,300 submissions, reflecting a genuine interest and commitment from both the Autistic and autism communities, as well as the broader public, in seeing the Strategy succeed.
